Ladder of Accountability

About a year or so ago, I was flipping through the TV channels and came across a speaker who was speaking at a conference.  It turned out that the speaker was a gentleman by the name of Bruce Gordon, who served as the CEO of the NAACP for a stretch.  What caught my attention was his comments about the levels of personal responsibility and the story he gave as an example. I quick grabbed a pen and began writing.  Below is a chart that encompasses what he spoke about.  The story he gave at the conference was about his then high school son who had apparently procrastinated on a large assignment.  He gave his son Accountability Speech 101 and spoke about a Ladder of Accountability as it applies to school work.  The chart below shows my version of the Ladder of Accountability as it might apply to a baseball player.  It’s better to read it from the bottom up.
# 1-4 = Immaturity and irresponsibility
# 5-8 = Maturity and responsibility
8. Total accountability
I am completely responsible for my baseball performance, attitude, and preparation on and off the field.

7. Ownership
I will try to get help from others but even if I don’t, I will figure out a way to get it done because it’s my career not theirs.
6. Finding solution
I’ll talk to the coaches and other baseball people to honestly critique me and my game.  We’ll come up with a game plan on how to improve my shortcomings.
5. Acknowledging reality
I’ve made some mistakes with my attitude and my preparation.  I screwed up.

4. Wait and hope
Oh, well.  What happens, happens.  I’ll just do what I can.
3. I can’t do anything about it.
I am not doing any extra work for him.  Can’t fix him so what’s the use.  I’m not going to play so why bother.
2. Someone else’s fault
Coach plays favorites and just doesn’t like me.  He doesn’t make baseball fun.  Never reminded us about the practice/game
1.Unconscious / unawareness
No idea there was a game / practice in the first place let alone today.  Left my uniform and equipment at home

Nice informative blog from teaching stand point. I did not fill out your survey, but think you should do the ideas you mentioned. get it done and google ever little league team and send them an email with your attachment. A site called "clickbank" offers sellers a way to gwt affiliates in various categories – their sports section for sale is not good, so you might check it out. I think it costs $45 or so to list as a vendor. I do a daily sports history site you might like with your experience. Good luck.
